What is THC?

THC is a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis plants. It belongs to a group of chemicals known as cannabinoids.

THC is predominantly known for one thing—its uplifting effects. But there's more to it, which is why it has continued to attract attention from enthusiasts and scientists alike looking to it for various wellness, therapeutic, and health benefits.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, as it is also known, works through the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the body. The ECS is crucial in maintaining internal balance or homeostasis by regulating various bodily functions.

The ECS consists of receptors, enzymes, and endogenous cannabinoids produced naturally in the body called endocannabinoids. When THC binds to the receptors in the ECS, it impacts various physiological processes.

Experts believe that THC mimics the chemical structure of endocannabinoids like anandamide, which is how it interacts with the ECS receptors. Like anandamide, THC also interacts with CB1 receptors, which are found in the brain and nervous system. It also interacts less readily with CB2 receptors found in the immune system.

Its interaction with CB1 receptors explains why THC produces uplifting effects while other cannabinoids like CBD, which interact with CB2 receptors, don't have the same effects.

You may have heard of different varieties of THC, such as “Delta 8” or “Delta 9.” These unique versions of the THC molecule are called isomers.

Not all THC variations are created equal, and even in the eyes of the law, some THC variations regulated differently in different states. Understanding the subtle differences between the different types of THC is vital in ensuring you get the right benefits and effects when you purchase your THC products online.

Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC comes second in the popularity scale compared to Delta 9 but has been making serious advancements as more people consider it a more suitable cannabinoid for those just getting introduced into the world of uplifting cannabinoids. Delta 8 THC is believed to be approximately half as potent as Delta 9 THC but still produces uplifting effects. It's common among new fans and those who prefer to focus on THC's wellness and therapeutic benefits as well as the uplifting effects.

The effects of Delta 8 are also said to be slightly different compared to those of Delta 9, with consumers reporting that Delta 8 has a more clear-minded and energizing experience than Delta 9 THC.

There are significantly fewer regulations and limitations around products containing Delta 8 THC, which has led to Delta 8 THC products becoming a popular alternative where Delta 9 THC products may be illegal or unavailable.

Delta 9 THC

This is easily the most well-known type of THC on the market. It is responsible for the relaxing effects associated with marijuana. When most people talk about THC, they're almost always talking about Delta 9. It is one of the most potent, naturally present types of THC, often preferred by experienced cannabis consumers.

Being the most well-known type of THC, Delta 9 THC is also the most heavily regulated in the United States and in many countries around the world. Consumer products must have less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC to meet the federal regulation of hemp, making it fully legal for sale. Some states in the U.S. have additional regulations around Delta 9 and other varieties of THC.

THCA

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is not your typical THC. It is the cannabinoid precursor to THC. When it is exposed to light or heat, it undergoes a process called decarboxylation, which results in it losing its carboxyl group and turning it into THC. Without THCA, there wouldn't be THC.

Researchers also believe it might have additional therapeutic potential, and as such, there are THCA products on the market that appeal to consumers looking for the benefits connected to THCA.

THCV

THCV is a lesser-known, minor cannabinoid also found in cannabis. It's one of the newer THCs identified.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin, as it is known in full, also has some uplifting effects, but to experience them you would need to consume it in hefty doses. Anecdotal evidence also suggests THCV may have energizing effects as well as offering appetite control benefits.

Benefits of Delta 8 THC

As is the case with all cannabinoids, people can have different experiences when using Delta 8 THC products. Most people use the products to relax and unwind, to boost their mood, or to help them sleep. From the responses and reviews of the majority of users that have used Koi CBD Delta 8 THC products, the most common benefits highlighted include:

  • Reduced feelings of stress
  • Deeper sleep
  • Elevated mood
  • Healthier appetite
  • Enhanced focus

Delta 8 Vs. Delta 9

Delta 8 draws many comparisons to Delta 9. However, most users might not know the differences between the two cannabinoids. If you’re interested in the science of cannabinoids, check out these facts.

Chemical Structure

The cannabinoids have a comparable molecular structure. The only difference is the location of the double chemical bond. On Delta 8, the double bond is in the 8th carbon chain. On Delta 9, it is on the 9th carbon chain.

Visually, the bond difference is quite subtle, but it substantially impacts how the molecules interact with the endocannabinoid receptors.

Molecular Stability

Delta 8 THC is more stable than Delta 9. Delta 9 oxidizes and degrades over time. As a result, it transforms into Delta 8 or CBN (cannabinol), a compound known for its sleep-supporting properties. Delta 8 THC doesn't oxidize to become cannabinol. Its stability makes it a more desirable ingredient for some people because it has a longer shelf life.

Affinity to CB1 Receptors

Delta 8 and Delta 9 both bind to the CB1 cannabinoid receptor when consumed. Because of the molecular structure, each compound's affinity to the receptor is distinct. Delta 8 keeps you clearer-minded than Delta 9 because the cannabinoid has a lower binding affinity to CB1 cannabinoid receptors in the brain.

Effects After Consumption

The most apparent differences between Delta 8 and Delta 9 are in the effects after consumption. Although Delta 8 also produces uplifting feelings, it is milder and has more clear-minded benefits.

Delta 8 THC Vs. CBD

Delta 8 THC gets lots of comparisons with CBD. While the two products share some comparisons, they are different compounds. Differences between Delta 8 and CBD include:

Euphoric Results

The primary difference between CBD and Delta 8 THC is that CBD doesn't produce euphoric results like Delta 8.

CBD has also been in the limelight longer. Multiple studies have suggested many health benefits, like its ability to support better sleep, help with natural relief, and provide a sense of calm.

Delta 8 THC is touted to have comparable health and well-being advantages as CBD. Considering the similarities in chemical composition, it is easy to see why the two compounds would find their respective places in people’s routines.

Legalization At The State Level

CBD is federally legal under the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, as long as the products are extracted from commercial hemp and contain no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight.

Delta 8 is also federally legal, based on the same federal law as CBD. Delta 8 THC products also must have a Delta 9 THC content material lower than 0.3% and must be derived from the hemp plant.

The legal guidelines for both products can vary at the state level. You should research the legal standing of Delta 8 and CBD in your locality before purchasing to determine legality.

CBD is widely considered to be safe for most users. Millions of people have used it over the past several years. CBD is well-tolerated by most people, although there have been rare cases of some users reporting uncomfortable side effects.

The apparent safety of Delta 8 is also encouraging. It has received the same reception as CBD, with most users leaving positive reviews after using the product. Side effects reported have been quite similar to those of CBD, which have been largely mild and rare.

For CBD and Delta 8 THC, consulting a physician before using any product is highly recommended to minimize undesirable effects, especially if you're taking a prescription medication.

What to Consider when Buying Delta 8 Products

You need to know what to look for before purchasing to ensure you get quality, safe, and effective products. Here are some things to look out for when shopping:

Check THC Content

Not all Delta 8 products are equal. One of the first things you should look for when buying your Delta 8 product of choice is the THC concentration. Some products have a high concentration, while others have a low THC concentration. The higher the THC concentration, the more potent the product. You shouldn't necessarily go for the highest concentration but rather match it to your preferred intake.

Lab Testing Certifications

A critical component of quality and safe Delta 8 products is the lab testing certifications. Any reputable and trustworthy vendor ensures their products have undergone rigorous third-party testing and have the certifications to provide peace of mind for customers and assure them of the highest standards.

The Extraction Process

The extraction process underlines the quality of the Delta 8 THC used in making the final product. Premium products are carefully extracted, ensuring a clean, high-quality extract without solvent contamination. At Koi, we use CO2 extraction that preserves the quality and purity of the resulting extract.

Customer Reviews

Lastly, have a look at the supplier and customer reviews on the Delta 8 products you’re interested in. Customer reviews are a great way to get first-hand information from people who have used the same product and should never be ignored, positive or otherwise.

Who Should Buy Delta 8 THC Products?
